Summary: Koss Porta Pro v Sennheiser PX100
Comment: Since everyone else has concentrated on the virtues of these excellent headphones, I thought it might be useful for people (who have researched) to offer the following subjective insights about the Koss Porta Pro and their main rival, the Sennheiser PX100 (which is also available from amazon at a similar price point).

I own both sets, so I would like to issue the following comments about their relative sound quality.

PX100 - These offer a very beautiful, well rounded sound. Not bass heavy, but very coherent, and thoroughly enjoyable as a listening experience. They tend to improve with 'run in', and sound terrific overall.

PortaPro - These offer better bass reproduction, but also sparkling mids and highs. They seem to produce a far richer sound overall, especially when comparing the same songs encoded in the same format (WAV) on a Cowon D2 personal media player.

In short, both these sets are excellent, but if the sole criterion is sound quality, my preference is just slightly for the Koss PortaPros. I have previously owned a pair of audiophile Sennheiser HD 595 headphones, and strongly feel that the sound quality of the Koss Porta Pro, in particular, is quite comparable.

I hope this review is useful to people who are on the fence, especially as no one else seems to have covered this comparison in their reviews.

Summary: how can you not love these?
Comment: On quality: Let's just say I have come across many earphones/headphones that are promising BUT not quite deliver. High end options like Bose, B&O, Shure and what-nots seem to be very good choices but it never really make the cut for affordability and IMHO it doesn't make much sense spending THAT much on 'phones. Well, at least until i got this pair of Portapros! Ever had the feeling that some musics/tracks are addictive? As far as myself is concerned, whenever i put on my portable music player while commuting, it was meant to enclose myself in a bubble to drown out the mundane noise of daily travels and never once because 'i want to feed my addiction to music'. This pair of Portapros has just rejuvenated my addiction to music, even while i am commuting. It has just brought new meanings to music addiction. About the leaks, why worry? - there's no harm in sharing some addiction to music eh?

On construction: virtually flawless. Every component's made for a purpose and none's a show-with-no-go. The band adjustment traps hair though, so becareful. Oh and it is quite robust too albeit a flimsy and simplified construction

On aethetics: the girlfriend hates it cos its not from this era. yes it is so 1980s. yes it does make one look geeky. look on the brightside, vintage-retro is never really outdated and the geeky look just proved the point that you know what you own and proud of it. Just this afternoon i pulled out the Portapro to have a go while waiting for my lunch and i think i have drawn some unwanted stare; but soon i am adrift in music wonderland, who cares? at least i don't.

Overall: The only short straw is that if you are used to small-ish 'phones (i.e., plugs, regular earphones) this could be a tad bit bulky for a start as it is only foldable into the size of a tennis ball. If you are contemplating for quality, durability, or how you may look wearing it, DON'T. As soon as you put them on and play your favourite tunes on it, you will get what i mean. For such quality in this price bracket and a lifetime warranty to boot, the Koss ProtaPro deserves a 5/5

Summary: Absolutely phenominal!
Comment: This is absolutely amazing!
I've always considered myself as a "sensible Audiophile", in the sense that I wouldn't class the most expensive equipment as being the best by any means.
This just proves this. It proves it so well.

I have Rockbox installed on my iPod, listening to a HD Audio File (FLAC, not ALAC). This is phenominal. I can hear so clearly, the vocals, the instrumentals.. It's just mind boggling.
For the price, I would highly recommend this, words just cannot explain the sheer ecstacy my ears are recieving at this moment.

Summary: KOSS PORTAPRO
Comment: I have just bought the Koss Portapro headphones and am amaxed at the quality. While the bass doesn't give the stomach-churning bass of my Stax Electrostatics, these phones give excellent quality at a fraction of the cost.

Summary: GOOD FOR QUIET PLACES NOT NOISY ONES.
Comment: These headphones are a testimony that not all things from the 80s are dead. They pump out very good, crispy clear music, they are very comfortable with a unique system that takes the pressure off your temple. The style will not be to everybody's liking for myself i don't worry too much about what others may say.
Now the negative. They is a big amount of sound leakage if you use them on the street or on the bus you will be sharing your music with everyone around you. I used them with the 1st generation ipod touch and they don't work well one needs to increase the sound to roughly 90% to really hear it and the outside noise intrusion does not help. I think you need a source with a powerful output. I think that they are more suitable for indoor use, i am moving to the skullcandy hesh but will still use the porta pro on my laptop.
