A Guide to Digital Cameras

The only thing better than reaching the summit of a mountain, a day rock climbing or a brisk walk in the countryside is the beautiful photos you can take while you`re there. Digital cameras are a great choice when it comes to outdoor photography because they`re versatile and you can change their settings for different light levels and types of weather.

When choosing, consider a camera`s megapixels carefully. Cameras with more megapixels create higher resolution images, but these take up more space on memory cards. Also, consider the type of zoom a camera comes with, optical zoom is fine because it works using a lens but `digital zoom` simply enlarges a part of the picture, so if you can, choose an optical zoom instead.

1.

Pentax Optio W30, (£152.95) is our number one. An affordable choice for people who love rambling, climbing and swimming. It`s water resistant and able to keep working up to 3 metres underwater for up to 2 hours! It even gets used by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Face recognition, auto-focus and shake reduction add to its appeal.

Specs: 3x zoom, 7.1Mp, 2.5-inch LCD, SD/MMC memory, 107x54x23mm, 140g

2.

Nikon Coolpix L11, (£79) has plenty of features such as face-priority auto-focus, a system to boost low-light detail in high-contrast shots and a red-eye reduction system, all for the tiny price. The only drawback is this only has basic shooting modes but the picture quality is superb.

Specs: 3x zoom, 6.0Mp, SD/MMC memory, 2.4-inch LCD, 89x60x27mm, 125g

3.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX55, (£140) has 8.1 megapixels so you can print off large high-quality photographs with little to no pixilation. You can also put this camera on to an `intelligent` auto adjust mode. In this mode, if it detects motion it automatically uses the image stabiliser to reduce shake and blur and if it detects faces it will auto-focus on these, so that when you take your shot it`s clear and sharp.

Specs: 3.6x zoom, 8.1Mp, SD/MMC memory, 3.0-inch LCD, 95x57x23mm, 143g

4.

Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-H7, (£219) feels like an old-fashioned 35mm camera and has a comfortable grip. The 15x zoom is superb for wildlife photography and its optical image stabilisation takes the blur away. A useful number of scene-modes and manual settings for exposures make this a good camera for those already a little adept in photography.

Specs:15x zoom, 8.1Mp, MS Duo/Pro memory, 3.0-inch LCD, 110x83x84mm, 407g

5.

Casio Exilim EX-Z1200, (£140) is a popular slim camera being a touch larger than a credit card in size and obviously somewhat thicker. 12 Megapixels means that although small this camera takes big beautiful high colour pictures. Menus on this camera are easy to use and images are very sharp!

Specs:3x zoom, 12.1Mp, SD/MMC memory, 2.8-inch LCD, 93x59x22mm, 152g

Care tips: Regardless of what digital cameras you use choose to follow-up on, don`t forget to get a case to keep your camera clean and dry and don`t let it get too hot
